I can think of: 
1. plan to take company private 
2. they are dumber than shit 
 
So, only one negative reason I can think of as to why they are buying.

How can a company with advanced battery tech make such a naive mistake on publishing paper?

Almost always a death sentence to the company.

The company needs to hit some key milestones now and communicate them.
